View Full Version : Stepper driver recommendations

Just picked up a couple of nice Astrosyn 3.8Nm stepper motors - 4.8V, 2.8A.

Anyone have any driver recommendations? I'd prefer to source from the UK or EU. I need three. I already have a 36v 10A power supply so would prefer something that would work with this, but it's not essential.

I have considered these:

Generic 2DM542 http://r.ebay.com/pXWKfv
Generic M542T http://r.ebay.com/FRL6sh
Generic DM556 http://r.ebay.com/uo0ZFe
Generic MA860H http://r.ebay.com/7HVFKS
Leadshine M542 http://r.ebay.com/Jn7M8H

One last product I like the look of: Smart Drive Micro Stepping Stepper Motor Driver Unit SDONE484A 36B250 http://r.ebay.com/QNsNpq

It looks like Smart Drive have gone out of business as they're not answering emails and their phone is disconnected.

Thanks

As I've had no replies to this I take it that no one has any experience with the drivers listed.

I know that there's plenty of love here for the Leadshine digital drives, so should I go with DM542, the DM556 or the AM882? The latter would be a bit of pain as I'd have to buy higher voltage power supplies (I have 36v). I think all three will give enough current for the motors.

Any preferred seller for the above.

AM882? The latter would be a bit of pain as I'd have to buy higher voltage power supplies (I have 36v). I think all three will give enough current for the motors.

These will work fine with 36V but then you will have the advantage of a better power supply for the future about 68 V is the norm.

Sorry to post again, but a new title might get a better response.

I have a 1980s CNC milling machine which I'm fitting with new motors and electronics. The original motors were 3.2Nm and I have sourced modern Astrosyn 3.8Nm 4.8V 2.8A.

I know several members of this forum are keen on Leadshine drivers so my question is which driver DM542, the DM556 or the AM882? The latter would be a bit of pain as I'd have to buy higher voltage power supplies (I have 36v).

Any preferred seller for the above.

Hi Agathon and welcome to the forum!

I dont think we've got a "go to" for the AM882 units, I think in general people just source the drivers from the best price, so eBay or Aliexpress, coming from China may be the best price if you don't mind waiting longer:

eBay

Aliexpress

As Clive (Hi Clive ) suggests, if you can make the investment now the 882's would be a good future proof call, however the DM's are solid choices too, it really depends on what you foresee for the future of the machine/components.

I'll merge your other thread into this one, sorry for the delay.

Many thanks Lee. I have to say I've put off buying drivers for some time now due to utter confusion about what I need.

My machine is a small professional milling machine with ball-screws and a table with axes weighing round 50kg each. The Astrosyn L709-2 motors exceed the torque of the old motors and I have no intention to upgrade further. Being a metal machining tool, I'm looking at relatively low feed rates.
