I am feeling the need to try bigger cutters in my machine, bigger than what the Kress can handle and have come up with an idea.

I found what looks like a spindle assy of some kind in a box of bits that I got with my lathe (see photo's below). My idea is to drive this with my Kress through a reduction (maybe belt drive) to give me slower speeds and more torque. It rotates really smoothly and feels like it has some quality bearings inside.

As anyone seen anything similar to the spindle in the photo or tried anything similar before?

Dimensions -

Overall length - 175mm
Body dia - 52mm
Keyed drive end- 17mm dia
Spindle bore - 38mm deep tapered with a 32mm dia on the front face, threaded at bottom of taper what looks like M10.

Cartridge grinding spindle, not seen that taper fitting before, could be a short form of INT / BT 30 taper as they are 1.25" on the gauge line diameter which is close to 32mm.

Usually very high class bearings fitted to these. What about using one of your low voltage motors as a source of motor?

Did think about using one of 24v DC motors but thought the power supply maybe a problem. They draw about 7-10A at idle and up to 125A max when under load, i know it would not need 125A to drive a spindle but what would it cost for say a 30A PSU???

I already have the digital speed controllers to run it so it does make sense, just don't fancy running it off a couple of battery's!

This look like a spindle from an internal grinder, so the bearings should be very good.
