Does anyone use solidworks?

Is it the best for designing curvy shapes for milling?

Why can I only find a price for the academic version?

Don't like this request a quote style of selling, sounds like they plan to screw me until the pips squeak. How much did you pay?

Much ta

I use Solid Edge which is similar to Solid Works but written by 2 completely different software companys.

Solid Edge cost about £4000 and about £1100 a year for maintenance (updates etc).

The academic licence's are usually far cheaper and should be fine for what you are doing.

The Alibre online store accepted my order and took my money and I'm in Australia.

Perhaps they think that Oz is another US state or part of Canada ...

Yes I had a problem to start with as I had the free registered version.
Spoke to Alibe and they told me to remove all cookies and try again and itw worked for me .
Ironically the first time I got directed to a UK reseller and I didn't go further.
later I went back, deleted cookies and got it but the sale on the debit card went to the same UK reseller and was listed at $99

Checked the bank this morning but nothing has come out yet.
Program downloaded and up and running, just need to watch some tutorials now.

Full 3D/2D CAD (https://www.alibre.com/products/ad_compare.asp) package. You can download a full version that works for 30 days if you want to try it out.
There's also a CAM package for it, from $1000 to $4000 depending on options.

Several users over on cnczone.com rate it highly.

The site seemed to shutdown for a few hours this evening (my time). It's up and running now and I've just downloaded the latest version in the hope that I'll get a license key 'soon'.

Where from? Nuttalls or direct? :heehee:

Edit: Phoned t'bu@@ers and they want £99 :joker:

Edit: Tried again on the US site, cookies intact, and seem to have bought it for $99. They'd better not charge my card £99 or there will be ructions (£1 = $1.65) :naughty:

Not asking for it, I was just querying that the license key was what you were referring to in your post when you said 'just got mine'.
Still waiting to hear back from Alibre as to whether I'll get a license key or not.

Thanks to John S for the name and email address of the sales manager in the US.

I've received an email advising that the offer is valid down under and that I'll be receiving the license info soon.

Now if I only had a Windows system to run it on...

How it works is you fill the forms out and allocate yourself a username say HumptyDumpty in the form and remember to use a proper email address, then go thru and pay for it.

It then spits you out to the download page [ you can get this anyway, it's not hidden ]

Download the software and install, when you come to run it for the first time it wants a user name, HumptyDumpty, and a password.

This password should be waiting for you in your email.
Enter this and it buggers off onto Alibre's site and checks the data base, then it opens the program, Job done.

You can have up to 5 licences so if you have a shop computer or laptop do the same on these but if not on the internet you have to request one.

Works like a charm!
Who needs manuals when there are forums like these to ask dumb questions.

I take back anything I've ever said about Poms

You get your licence key when you run the program for the first time as long as you have a net connection.
You just need your user name and password to varify your are entitled to the licence.
You get this during the checkout process.
