I'm looking for something that is better than a smooth stepper to connect a computer with a machine.

If someone knows something, please tell me.

Take a look at the EMC2 hardware page, it lists the Galil and other motion controlers, there might also be a page on the Mach site.

Because you mention the Smooth Stepper which only works with Mach3, then I presume that is the controller you are asking about.

First off, have you considered the LPT? First and best option for Mach output IMO. Depends what pulse rate you need.

The later PCI Galil cards work with Mach3. They would be a step up.

About ten times the price of the SS unless you can get a second hand one.

Look on the Mach support forum for info on the Galil plugin.

Do you need it to work with Mach 3? if not there are loads of CNC controllers out there.
If it needs to work with Mach 3, you will be restricted.
Most of the CNC controllers that dont work with Mach, also dont need a PC.

I would suggest you to take a look to the COLIBRI by twintec, it's becamened the most used on the Italian cnc forum, it works very well and all the feature are almost ready , many people moved from mach3 and the smooth stepper to this controller, the software is free and so all the upgrade relased.

The site have the english(ish) version as well

If you want a controller you could look at http://www.eaziform.co.uk/index.php?products,m401 only drawback is the serial port needed as most laptops now dont have them!
