As the title says... up to 8" dia x 5/8" thick, probably cast iron but maybe a modern aluminium alloy might do the job?

If it was aluminium I'd look for a chunk of bar, but I'm not convinced Aluminium is up to the job, plus all the other gears are cast iron and I'd like to keep them the same, after all its a partly a restoration thing...

Might be better off looking for secondhand gears that can be turned down to suit what you need, the cost of cast iron blanks is horrendous given that it's a base metal, probably something to do with supply and demand.

Do you know any villains ? According to the press they are always running about with iron bars in their hands, me I have trouble getting hold of any at reasonable costs ?

I think they've resorted to lead pipe these days John as no one wants that any more...

thanks for the suggestion though, I'll bear it in mind... although a 127 tooth gear at 16DP is 8" so may be a while to find something bigger than that!
