Hi all just getting to the state of my build were I'm looking into the electronics,
I am looking at the Gecko G540 for the ease as I'm not clued up on electronics,
been looking at http://www.cncrouterparts.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=75
for a complete option, a little more expensive than any thing in the UK but made newbie friendly.
Befor I shell out any money is there any other options that match upto the G540 I should be looking at.
Thanks for any input

Thanks for the reply John,
how does this compare to the G540,
things like the Mid-band resonance compensation & Micro stepping
Your post is a lot cheaper but not sure how they hold up in comparison,
I don't mind paying a little more if I don't have to upgrade 6 months down the line.

Hi Jonm, I have looked at te kits from Zapp, they look good but again not much differance in the price after vat n delivery,
Slightly bigger motors but a bit of wiring ect to do.
again getting a little more with the resonance compensation from the G540 & true plug n play from cncrouterparts I think they are still ahead as far as I can see, but it's a lot of money to shell out so that's why I wa asking for input, Thanks again

If you are looking for separates, I posted the link to Roy's system 4 as you were looking for a plug and play, then Arceurotrade do the same 4.2 amp 50 volt drives at £42.50 including VAT and if you buy two or more postage is free.

http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Stepper-Motors/Stepper-Drivers

Watch the Gecko drives, nothing wrong with the drives but Customs hammer imports from the USA, has a nasty way of soon adding up, customs duty, then PO handling fees then VAT on top of all that.

Roy's gear is topnotch, the breakout boards that Zapp sells are actually Roy's boards.

Thanks again John, nice link for the drives.
Not sure if I missed something on there but they have a 650Ncm Motor rated at 4.2A/Phase so I could get x4 motors/drivers @£101.45 = £404 just power n BOB to get
That seems good.
What Breakout board would you recommend for the arceurotade 4.2 amp drivers, might be worth a closer look into.
I did an import check on the Gecko package adding about another £87,
which would bring the complete package including leads and power supply to £574.60 all in.
The motors being 380 oz-in.
I would like to stay in England for the goods but I have heard good things about the Gecko G540...

Whoa,
Those 650 Ncm motors are right big bastards, the sort you need on a Bridgeport.
What are you driving ? Bigger is not always better.

[1] You have to overcome the torque detent when parked and because they have a larger mass they accelerate slower so very often a smaller motor can deliver more power because it gets there quicker.

[2] Those 4.2 amp driver will power it but at a crawl, the motor is 5v rated, the driver to stay within safety limits needs to be about 40 to 44 volts MAX, that's just over 8 times the motor rating.
To get a decent performance you need to be close to 20 times so these drivers are not going to do it with this motor.
