Great stuff Neil - bet that felt like a big milestone reached.

Will be nice to see how it runs in its new configuration.

You and me both Clive. Will be interesting when I fire t up again tomorrow. Need to make some rubber bump stops asap to park the gantry at the bottom safely...think I have some polyurethane rod somewhere.

Good idea Clive.....the stops have to be about 60mm (will measure later) and I think will have to be rectangular....more research needed I think!

Neil Do you think you will need another bracket to bolt the frame to the wall at the top, shimmed as to not twist the frame:applouse: Hope you are only using he hammer to tap the connections into place

There are 2 additional bolts half way up bolting the frame to the wall...shimmed with custom cut bits of pipe 😁 the base is shimmed and bolted at all 4 corners so I'm hoping it's still all square....will tell when I first go to cut later today...

Hammer was, as you suggested, to tap in the wires...who needs screwdrivers?

Don't seem to be able to see any chips though:thumsup: . Just thinking aloud how about a brake operated with a solenoid that operates when you lose power. It could be on a counter weight steel cable over the top (on a pulley) and then brake the cable.

I didn't want to make and chips...we have a VIP coming to work tomorrow so wanted to keep the floor clean [emoji1]

I have thought about a counterweight...still might give it a bit more thought but for now I think it's going to be rubber parking stops. Will look into (or just ask Dean) a macro to park the gantry when I'm done using it.

Awsome work!
I'm also thinking about going vertical with my router (thanks to Dean :) )

What do you guys think about parking the gantry up top and securing it with a clamp/bracket? Would suit my space much better ;)

This will answer both of you.

My orginal vertical machine I used to park at the bottom which was the best place to park for me but could park anywhere I liked as it didn't fall down due to light gantry. Since then I've aquired different machine with gantry using the same design has neil's which is much heavier and like neil slowly creeps down when power off.
So the solution was counter balance and now can park where ever I like. It also takes lot of the strain off the motors while working meaning I can tune motors a little more aggresive if I like.

Don't ask me to show the counter balance because it's rougher than rough(Which sure Clive will confirm) and like every thing I do just for my self it's thrown together to get it working ASAP. To give an idea consists of bit of old timing belt and tractor weight.:dejection:

Used the Router for the first time since going vertical and it's soooooooooo much easier :yahoo: ....no bending over the sides (kneeling for me as I had it on the floor!) to load the work. Just need to make a dust shoe ASAP and cyclone to stop the chips from flying everywhere....it fair flings the plastic chips (and the static little buggers cling to everywhere!!!) around

No because as soon as the oshiiiiiiiiiiiit button is pressed the gantry drops....... However........I do have my foam kneeling pad which I don't use anymore now it's vertical....I could put a couple of cable ties through the handles to loop under my ears to keep it strapped over my head!!!!

BTW - would demi-jon bungs do for rubber stops or not man enough for the job - just a thought as the type for the airlock come pre-drilled iirc.

Cheers Chris, the chips were fair flying out...I was finding them at least 3m away from the machine. Got to put sides on the machine and box it in to contain them all. Lots of little jobs still to do on it but I'm getting there... slowly!

Just like to say after using the router vertically for a few weeks that it's the best thing I've done to the machine, it's so much easier working on it....no bending over the rails to load work, no twisting to get at the collet to change the bits. If the bits are smaller than the collet then you don't have to hold them in whilst tightening...the bits fall out of the work so you're not re-cutting them.....only seeing positives at the moment :yahoo:

List of things to do next is...:

1. Home & Limit switches!!!!!!!
2. Dust/chip extraction (was cutting 12mm MDF letters and it goes everywhere!!!) is a must!!!
3. Enclosure round the machine to stop dust/chips.
4. Cooling Fans/filters in the control panel
5. Cooling radiators for the coolant
6. Finish off the control panel wiring.

Hi Neil, sounding really good, BUT, please please please do not cut MDF or exotic woods without a good amount of extraction and/or a damn good breathing mask ( I am only assuming you don't wear a mask of course )

My reason for butting in here is that my father died a few years back following a long painful lung condition brought on by his love of making things out of MDF and exotic woodturning in the shed. He did have the dust extract that had bags on it but he still came out sometimes looking like a snowman!

Wood dust is nasty stuff.

It made me change my views on carefree metalwork as well, I spent a lot on serious extract for the plasma table, i've stopped powder-coating now, I have stopped turning cast iron on the lathe due to the dust and so on, it focuses the mind a bit.....

Hi Dave, I wear one of those twin filter painting breathing masks as I know MDF dust is very nasty stuff (I'm sure balsa dust is equally nasty)....look a knob but saves the lungs! I'm building an enclosure round the machine and there will be an extraction system (6" tube and for the enclosure which will also be for the lathe, welder and milling machines which will vent outside. The dust shoe will be connected to a vacuum cleaner (Nifilsk 30T vacuum) via a DIY cyclone dustbin.....

Made a rough dust shoe out of 12mm ply and a bit of draught excluder. Just got to test it works ok before working out how to fix it on so there's access to change the bits and do the probing...

Any ideas anyone on how best to do this? I'm leaning towards neodinium magnets holding one side on...

You're correct Clive, knew there had to be a setting but wasn't sure till I read the manual.

Set my park position too for changing bits and also for parking the gantry at the end of the day....slowly getting there with it.

Noticed the Y axis was getting some play in it as the finish was suffering and also things that fit together that I've made obviously weren't quite round as they were binding at 90°. Grabbed the Z axis and wobbled from side to side and there was a definite movement....so pulled the back plate off the gantry and hoiked out the ballscrew. Pulled apart the BK bearing and shimmed the bearing outer races by 1mm by making a shim on the lathe.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161026/423bed57be8a2c9789bcf9e6d432cf61.jpg

Now its all solid again but I've noticed one X axis ballscrew is clunking so going to pull them all apart (and Z) and shim them all.

Ok, question guys. What speeds and feeds do you guys use for ply? I'm cutting 12mm structural ply (3 ply) full depth with a 6mm two flute carbide cutter (also used 2 flute straight router bits) and its squealing away and no matter how I tweak the speed and feed it squeals and then invariably the cutter snaps. My machine is capable of 10 m/min and I've the 2.2kw w/c spindle. I'm trying to cut the words Merry Christmas by the way....

Just wondering as last week was cutting fine with the same feeds and feeds.

My calc is giving me 24,000rpm, 4000mm/min feed with hard plywood and 6mm 2 flute carbide tool, max depth slotting of 4.5mm

Wobblycogs
02-12-2016, 08:55 AM
Obviously I don't know what you'd use on a CNC (yet) but if you were routing by hand with a 6mm bit you'd use the fastest router speed (24,000 rpm usually) and take 4mm deep cuts max. Feed can be anything fastest enough to prevent the bit from burning the timber. By hand and with a jig I'd guess I'd be doing about 2.5m/min but it's mostly done by ear. If you can use a 1/2" straight bit you can go much much faster they are nearly indestructible in wood.

Hi neil

Thanks for the post on my log - I placed the order for the bits soon after posting the video!. Also great idea to use a cold water tank for the spindle cooling system. I found when I was running in my spindle for about 3 hours that the water in my 10 litre bucket was tepid at the end of the period.

Hi neil

Thanks for the post on my log - I placed the order for the bits soon after posting the video!. Also great idea to use a cold water tank for the spindle cooling system. I found when I was running in my spindle for about 3 hours that the water in my 10 litre bucket was tepid at the end of the period.

regards

Mike
Hi Mike,

No problems, glad it was useful! I've been really impressed with how efficient it is. If you cut plastic don't forget to earth the bin!

I was finding my 5 litre water tub got pretty warm after a couple of hours cutting and had one of the 4 gallon cold water tanks left over from putting in a chemical blacking line at work so decided to use that and upgrade the pump whilst I was at it.

Put a cyclone in before the CamVac (just because I had it rather than need it) and its brilliant!! Takes out about 95% (guess) of all crap, fine dust as well....

Cutting plastic so you get a good belt from the static when you go to empty it [emoji16]

How do you find the noise on the Camvac?

Pardon???!!! 😁 its quite noisy, I'm going to put it outside when we build a store, it gets loud after running for a while.

That's what I thought. A quiet, powerful vacuum that can filter fine dust would be a fine invention!

You can get a silencer for it, think of people who grow things in houses where they don't want others to hear.....😉

Finally got round to putting the CamVac outside. Work are building a storage/outbuilding and its now out there...much quieter now!

Also putting in an extraction system to take smoke away from lathe (still got to plumb them in) and milling machine, also plumbing it into the router cabinet to take away balsa dust etc. that the dust shoe misses.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170608/0f74df80f90c72a1979eb6c277f434c8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170608/7abdb2ca0b7b4b573ba309f96ba2adc3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170608/804efd2eb0fd2a411c891e1b77cef2db.jpg

Hello all, sorry not been on here for ages (years it seems!!) My CNC Router has been working away successfully for a long time now making RC plane parts and plastic parts for work...still not finished and the jobs that needed finishing off before still need finishing off. As Dean (Jazz) said you have to do them at the time else you'll never do them!

Been busy with work and recently replaced the Warco GH1322 lathe we bought a few years ago with an XYZ 1630 CNC lathe so been having fun with that. Only had it 2 (working) days so just getting used to programming it. An XYZ 500 LR VMC is the next purchase this year to replace our Warco GH Major round column mill.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180602/736c027019fad99ecf536c24c8811f7b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180602/7fb93d8d6ead0db62e8ad86ba47bfa7d.jpg

Do you mind me asking where in the Uk you are as I fly/build big gliders too. I'm up from the North, Lancashire. Spent many hours out out on the moors flying into the sunset out over Belmont way. Certainly would be a great contact to know you as there isn't many who share the same interests that I know!

Hi RobC
There are quite a few of us on this forum who build and fly RC models and gliders. I'm one of them too! Here's my build (http://www.mycncuk.com/threads/8206-Ar-last%21%21%21-Started-my-Gantry-3-Axis-CNC-Build)and a picture of wing ribs I have cut on my machine

Hi all.....been a while as work has been keeping me rather busy. Now we're in lockdown I thought I'd pop back on to see what's happening here!

I no longer work at Howdon, so don't have the use of the router, therefore I will at some stage be making another CNC router but this one will be a real lightweight affair to use in the house just to cut balsa and 3mm ply!!

Hope you're all keeping safe and well :eagerness:
