Does anyone know where to get small quantities of gear box oil for mills? i.e. Mobilgear 627 / Shell Omala 100 in 5l quantities - I can only find 20l or 209l drums!

would an auto gearbox oil suit..??

edit... automotive gearbox oil not auto-gearbox oil.

Possibly, however automotive and industrial gearbox oils are in different product groups in Shell's literature. I'm not an expert on oils - can anyone advise?

i've got no idea either, just thought about the small quantities. An alteration to my first post, i meant automotive gearbox oil rather than auto-gearbox oil

I figured you meant gearbox oil rather than trans oil. Automotive gearbox oil was my first thought, can't really see why not, I check with the machine supplier tomorrow.

Initially I was going to say any 100wt hydraulic oil would do, but having found a spec sheet, it looks like Omala has EP additives to make it more gearbox friendly. The most common EP additive used to be sulphur, however the spec states that Omala is bronze friendly, so it doesn't contain sulphur (sulphur attacks/disolves bronze).

Personally, if it was my own machine, and I wasn't running it at high loads all the time, I'd stick some ISO100 hydraulic oil in, as lots of machines have specified and used normal hydraulic oil for many years (usually under the guise of Shell Tellus!)
Other option is to use some of the more modern car gearbox oils, as they're pretty thin due to the manufacturers doing everything possible to improve effiency.

Not sure if you sorted this out but I just got gear box oil from Morris lubricants.
