The totally free to use SprutCAM 7 Express has the ability to produce text using any installed Windows font or it's own stroke fonts. You can then machine this using the 2D Contouring or Pocketing operation.

iv found this useful for a quick fix... its free, simple to use, it will g-code the outline of any font for cutting out or drag engraving
(it wont do any fancy variable depth V-cutter calligraphy)

Cambam lets you use any font on the pc, I just tried it last weekend.....I used a pocket then profile operation rather than the engrave option (probably the wrong way, I am just learning this stuff)

This is a picture of the type of thing I am trying to achieve. I use solidworks and solidcam. The lettering in the picture is only 5mm in height.

If you have decent CAM you can already use any fonts available to your Operating System.
There is software available to produce fonts but making fonts is a lot of work, even with the right software, it's easier to choose from the thousands already available for free download,

That's a case of trawling through the available fonts for something suitable, you've seen it in good detail and so will be best placed to pick one,
