Just found this machine on ebay Black Cat CNC Machine 300x200mm cut area. UK Support / Warranty | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Cat-CNC-Machine-300x200mm-cut-area-UK-Support-Warranty-/280934289760?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4168fd1160)
Never heard of them and the bed is small but maybe an alternative for the future if they make bigger machines?

Someone on the forum was thinking of getting one, not sure if he did. They do do bigger machines:

Redsail,Cutting Plotter,Vinyl plotter,Vinyl cutter (http://www.premiersign.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=BC-400-300i)

I don't like their advertising / description:

It says on the 300x200, 'All three axis are driven with anti backlash lead screws' which isn't great due to the backlash, but then a bit later in the description it says 'High Quality Ball Screw anti backlash bearings throughout', so which is it?
It says, Industrial Strength High Torque 4Amp 48V 128step stepper motors, but then states 'Stepper Motors: Step Angle: 1.8 degree, Current: 3.0A/phase ' which is the standard 200step/rev and a different current... so again which is it? Probably the latter but if they can't even get the most basic specifications right in the advert one does wonder what else might be wrong.
Also says 'High Grade Construction, will cut hard metals' which seems unlikely. Before considering it you need to find what type of rails it actually uses - i.e. supported (can just see those on the bed) or not and also if it uses ballscrews.

Anyway, with regards to making your own I can't really add or offer anything different to what Jazz has said since I'm currently tied up making another one.

X is supported rail. Cant see Y, Z is unsupported. Looks nice construction, wonder if they do their own casting. Wiring looks OK, but let down by the X-stepper having loose cabling, should have routed it under the machine and into the loom with the others...

Hi I have seen this machine on ebay which looks quite good. Black Cat CNC Machine 600x400mm cut area. EU Support / Warranty | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Cat-CNC-Machine-600x400mm-cut-area-EU-Support-Warranty-/271033539896?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3f1adb9d38)
I know little about the quality of cnc machines so can anyone recommend this companies products?

Saw that on ebay recently as well and thought it was expensive for what you would be getting. I dont think this part of their description is correct,

1.5Kw frequency Stepper drivers:
Input Voltage: 220V-240 V, 50/60HZ
Output Voltage: 0-240 VAC
Output Power: 1.5 KW
Output Frequency: 0-400 Hz
Output Current: 7.0 A
Capacity: 2.8 KVA
Overload Capacity: 10.5 (60s)(A)

It should be describing the VFD not the steppers.

Also note that you get 6 months warranty with the spindle and not 12 months as for the rest of the machine.

To my uneducated eyes that machine looks like the chinese ebay 6040 (YooCNC?) with a paint job and a bunch of the electronics (drivers, breakout etc) upgraded/replaced?

Yeah I had seen them on eBay and thought the same - hence I moved on to other options..

I see what you mean, have just gone back to ebay and had a look. The model number gives a clue (4060 - code for 6040??) wonder what the support would be like, thats worth paying extra money for dont you think? £1299 with software and 12 month warranty (6 months spindle!) and they only sell cnc kit.
Oh I dont know this cnc buying is so tricky!

They do look very similar, I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It looks like it could be a UK built copy of a Chinese design, rather than a rebadged YooCnc. There are a few construction details that look different to me. Hopefully the quality is better than the Chinese ones, difficult to tell without getting hands on experience.

I think they just buy them in tbh.. as i emailed him about this Superb 3 Axis CNC Controller for sale, complete unit, ready to plug in and go, | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280937390264?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649) the other week and he said it was made by the same place where they get their machines from!

Really these don't look that bad for the money if you've got nothing too ambitious planned.

Black Cat CNC Machine 600x400mm cut area. EU Support / Warranty | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Cat-CNC-Machine-600x400mm-cut-area-EU-Support-Warranty-/280937808624?_trksid=p4340.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D11%26meid%3D1264469785539366552%26pid%3D100 011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D3%26#ht_9566wt_1163)

A chinese 6040 works out at what? About £1200ish including the shipping charges? For a couple of hundred more these look to have better electronics all housed in tidy enclosure, are from a UK source and they've obviously stripped down the machine to paint it so maybe quality control is better than some chinese kid on a bowl of rice a day cranking these things out. Don't know what blackcat support is like but even if its nil then they're on a par with the chinese!

Not saying this is the best for your ~£1500 but it does look like an option providing your cutting ambitions are modest.
