Hi graham here. i'm from just out side newcastle
so i've found this place as i'v a viceroy tds 11gb metric lathe i'm wanting to convert to cnc! i have looked at doing this a while ago 06/07 but the price was still alot more than i was willing to pay, but now things are a lot better now..

now what i'm wanting to do it for is so i can cut both metric and inch threads with out the carry on of having to power the lathe back and forth all the time. but tbh thats not the real problem, unlike boxford lathes where you can buy the charge gears an parts with easy, you'd be looky to find the same ones i have on the lathe now, or i could get them made but the cost of doing so would run at£1000 easy and then i'd only beable to cut a few threads,
plus the fact all the things i could make that i could not as it is as a manual.

so i'm looking for bit help on what to get, as i've been reading up alot and its got my mind mashed up!

so far i'm thinking of a 425oz nema 23 motor for the x axis. might be geared down to 2.1 plus i don't want it sticking out to far as space is tight..
and 906oz nema34 motor for the z axis
and a The SF1605x1100 machined ball screw for z axis and that £52.60
The SF1605x400 machined ball screw xaxis as thats £38.60 plus cost to buy the screws and mounts and so on,
i'm unsure on what drvers and borad to use, i don't want to spend a bomb on it??

the other main problem i am going to have is how do you mount the ballscrew on the z axis under the cross slide, as i think i'v only got 30mm max.. will check tomorrow..

Can you post a picture of the lathe?

Linearmotionbearings2008 on eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-anti-backlash-ballscrew-RM1605-1000-1000-C7-cnc-/250677821096?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a5d8ffea8#ht_590wt_1166) is the cheapest place to easily get ballscrews, plus he does custom end machining exceptionally cheaply.
Look on eBay for the stepper drivers. You want to get 75-80V drivers, so not m542...should be around £40-£45 each.

If you're struggling for room on the Z-axis it's common to put the ballnut on the end of the slide at the back and have a longer ballscrew, like I did here (http://www.mycncuk.com/forums/lathe-build-logs/4497-micro-lathe-zero-backlash*-conversion.html).

No tax only vat and shipping admin fee about £10.

The best way is to email Chai direct asking for a price of the exact size you want plus end machining, it often works out bit cheaper than Ebay has he doesn't have fee's.
Don't worrie he's 100% trust worthy and all round good guy.

... of the exact size you want plus end machining ...

How is this specified Jazz... Is the length the total length including the machined bits?

Yes just ask for total length this includes the standard end machining.
If you want special machining then send him dimensions and ask for thread length plus end machining.

Often you'll just want the motor connector portion longer so just ask for this portion the required length but still state total length, just make it clear this length including extra length portion.!
