Locking Multi-Pole Line Sockets : Maplin Electronics (http://www.maplin.co.uk/locking-multi-pole-line-sockets-43121?C=73669)

If you want it quick from the UK or do an ebay search for GX16 connector for the chinese stuff.

John did you manage to find the plug yet?

My spindle came a couple of days ago and the plug connector has H17-4t inscribed on it. Mine isn't the screw on type, more like a bayonet type where it needs a quarter turn. It has 2.5mm pins, so rated at 20A 500v

Searching h17 series connector brings up alibaba links only. You could try contacting them, for 1 or buy a few and put them on ebay.

Mine is the screw on type so the Maplins one will work fine.
I was in there on Friday night but didn't get one as i could do with some 4 pin and some 6 pin plugs and sockets for a project.
I can get 10 pairs from China for £10 post paid for the 4 pin and £13 for the 6 pin. and I'm not waiting

Can get 50 from China for £30ish posted if you look around...

Those H17 connectors look good for stepper motors as they accept a good wire size, unlike the GX16 which is a bit smaller than I'd like for CY-4core 1.5mm^2 cable.

John if you're looking for the gx16 type connector, I use a site called dealextreme in china for all sorts. Heres a link for all gx16 connectors they do from 2 to 9 pins.

gx16 - Free Shipping - DealExtreme (http://s.dealextreme.com/search/gx16)

Go into the connector you're after and they have bulk discount options. I worked out for 50 gx16 4 pins, plug and socket at around £37 with free delivery.

Only ordered on the 15th, despatched on 17th so not yet.

Just used the online chat thing to check for you:

6630

So it's fine - I'll let you know when they arrive if you want...

Good discount if you buy 100, I should have done that.

They will also give you the discount if you buy 50 of one type and 50 of another. Just asked them and ordered 50 4 pin and 50 6 pin.

Yea, I'll get some of the 20mm 4-pin version for steppers and maybe some more.

PM you tonight.

Thanks.. just noticed there doesn't appear to be anywhere to connect the shielding, so I reckon get 5-pin (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/GX20-5pin-circular-connector-free-shipping/313486_492543958.html) instead.

Shielding in line-socket is clamped under the cord grip
Shielding in chassis plug uses tag under mounting nut.

I have the eBay versions of these...

Unless you want shielding independent of chassis ground then you need the extra pin

John S

Yes managed to cancel the order but spotted another problem.
The multi pins I already have [ forget the high speed motor ] are opposite, the chassis sockets are female. If you use these GX16-4 or the 19-4' [ or 5's ] for stepper drives the pins, when connected, are live.

Can't seem to see the opposite version, must have a different designation but can't see what it is.

Yes but look who's selling them.

Might be worth a glance thru the low voltage wiring regs.

irving2008
20-08-2012, 07:55 PM
If its under 48v DC its not an issue, though it isn't best practice. Over 48v its a no-no...

EDIT: Its changed in the latest regs:

Insulation against Direct Contact of the conductive parts of a SELV system is required if the operating voltage exceeds 12 V a.c. or 30 V d.c. Insulation is not required if the operating voltage is at or below these values.

John S

Thanks Irving, saves me looking at the regs but as you say law or not it's not good practice.

So because I have to keep to regs, these are not for me. I have some of the 4 pin military type ones similar to these.

CONNECTOR Picture - More Detailed Picture about 4pin circular connector, diameter 1.5mm*4 ,free shipping Picture in Connectors from Shanhe Electric Co Ltd (http://www.aliexpress.com/item-img/P20-4pin-circular-connector-diameter-1-5mm-free-shipping/552056166.html)

But opposite, female in the socket so legal, Again all the ones on the aliexpress site seem to be opposite

John S

Just been in the workshop and stripped two of the military plugs down as in the pic above, one from RS ? with correct female insulated chassis plug and one of the above from Ebay.

Idea was to see how easy if possible, they could have the guts swapped over, yes they can do but it takes 3/4 of an hour and you make a right mess getting wire circlips out that were never designed to be removed. So unless you can get these female chassis type that's a non runner on time alone. Certainly don't fancy taking a week off work to do 100

So the question is what other than XLR's are available in 4 and 6 pins Female Chassis mount and good for 8 amps ?

Amphenol bayonet type, 7.5A: http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/58210.pdf

Conxall with #16 contacts, 13A: http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/83441.pdf

Switchcraft, 7.5A: http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/340542.pdf

and there are others... pretty much anything in a size 16 shell will do it...

Thanks Irving.
However means nothing to me,
read the data sheet, go to farnell and I get 567,945 pages to choose from.

Was really looking for something from China so i can bulk buy.

I asked the supplier if they could do the 19mm the other way round and they've now listed these:

Aliexpress.com : Buy 4 pins push pull circular quick connector 16mm from Reliable connector suppliers on Shande Electric Factory (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/4-pins-push-pull-circular-quick-connector-16mm/400873_621542387.html)

I'll ask if they can do the same but 19mm...

If the 19mm is to get the current capacity, (GX16 is nominally 5A) ask them if they can do 1.5mm pins instead of 1mm in the GX16. They'll be good for 8+A and some suppliers do them in the 16mm shell (as per one of the datasheets I listed)

It's partly that, but also to get the wire size I require in them; 4-core CY 1.5mm^2 cable.

Yes I got the same email from Andrew this morning for 4 pin and 6 pin.
That'll do me nicely as I'm not into wiring a stepper motor with welding cable :calm:

Anything larger than a M542 and I hard wire back to the driver anyway.

I prefer to do that, but for some reason people seem to enjoy sticking connectors in between.

They arrived today:

Whcih ones are those Jonathan, they look like they're still the back-to-front ones (chassis plug/line socket)?

Did anyone order some chassis socket/line plug ones in bulk and be willing to sell some?

Yes they are, but they'll be fine for limit switches and signals as they're well under 50V. I'm going to order some of the right-way-round ones - once the seller has got back to me about getting them with 19mm external diameter I'll get some of both sizes.
