I've come across a few interesting papers on machine design that other people might find a useful source of ideas for new builds:

Excellent and lengthy paper detailing a heavy duty design:

Structural dampening to reduce vibrations:

equations to determine most effective means of layer damping with different geometries - Thanks Tenson.

Mechanical properties of wood composites (mdf/ply etc):

Patent application: Improved damping of cast iron for machines:
HIGH RIGIDITY, HIGH DAMPING CAPACITY CAST IRON - Patent application (http://www.faqs.org/patents/app/20110041960)

I've read the first one before - there's a lot of good information in that paper, particularly the bit about optimising a gantry design at the end.

You might be interested in the second one aswell as you have a steel box section machine. The vibration damping seems to be massively improved by filling with pipes wrapped in damping tape and concrete compared to a plain concrete fill.

moved to the FAQ's, Problems & Solutions (http://www.mycncuk.com/forums/faqs-problems-solutions/) and given a better title.

Nice post DC thanks !

Great info, though a lot of the first paper went over my head! :)

I'm pleased to see constrained layer damping is effective; I thought it might be a good way to go.

Quick glance looks like there is some seriously heavy reading there so a lot will probably go straight over my head if I can't remember what I learnt all those years ago lol
Looks like a good find for those that will be able to understand it all though. I did learn enough to realise that I may need to rethink things, looks like my cardboard & selotape machine may have a few faults.

Me too, I'm still being a bit of a dunce and can't find any material for muppets like me to bridge the math gap so I can understand how to apply the maths correctly myself but I can at least look at the pretty pictures. :)

I've just downloaded z88 so I can play with some FEA software, if I can outsource the clever bits to the computer I'm hoping I can get away with tweaking designs based on pretty colours...

Another interesting paper here, showing equations to determine most effective means of layer damping with different geometries.

Thanks Tenson, I added it to the original post so people won't have to read through pages of forum posts to get to the documents, is that ok?

No problem, I just wish I could understand the paper better, lol!

A paper comparing the performance of cast iron, steel and epoxy granite.

Nice paper and easy to understand :)

I notice that although the epoxy granite has less mass for the same stiffness and better damping over steel and iron, it is also physically larger. In most DIY designs I imagine an acceptable size for the beams is chosen first. I'd be interested to see constant beam size vs. stiffness, mass and damping.

I'm not sure if I get what you mean about acceptable beam size, a lot of people seem to design the gantry then increase the beam size because they realise the round rails are too wide to attach to the beams and then decide to add another beam when jazz/jon tell them the gantry is crap and far too weak. ;)

Am I being dense and missing something obvious like you mean beam length?
