I am well on the way to finish the rebuild on my Centec 2A and have been buying some tooling and am now looking for a vice. Cant decide between a general swivel type milling vice or a tool makers vice.
Does anyone have both and can offer pros and cons of each?

Regards

Ian

I've only got a smallish Warco WM16 mill but use a swivel type vice. It has surprised me how often I've actually used the swivel action. I set it to zero, then DTI a long bar before fixing the vice to the bed. Then it's just a case of swivelling the vice and returning it to zero when you're done.

Decided to go for the tool makers vice seeing as I might have a go at reproducing another one at a later date.

If you get one which incorporates a base that allows the vice to rotate then it makes it a fair bit quicker to align the vice parallel to the milling machine's table.

The one I have bought does not have a swivel base. I have plans to make a "parallel clamp kit" as someone at work called it which ensures that the vice is positioned in the same place when mounted to the table. The guys an old tool maker and says he will show me how to make one.
