As the title would suggest, I am a total CNC newbie, with plans to convert a yet-to-be-purchased lathe to CNC operation. The basic idea is to fabricate odds and sods for my hobby, which is restoring and modifying cars and bikes.

In 'real life' I work in IT, mostly in databases, but have some programming experience. Linux and Perl.

I have lots of tools and a 'get stuck in' attitude which have served well so far.

I have a 3yr old girl, and a boy on the way, so time is limited and progress will be slow!

Love the build threads on the forum and and associated YouTubes!

Be prepared for lots of noddy questions from me (some so noddy that internet searches so far haven't found the answers - so they must be so noddy that nobody feels it's worth documenting the answers!) - please be gentle!

Thanks,

Eggs

Thanks guys - already found some 'partial' answers! Thanks again - sure I'll be reaching out, and cool to have guys local. I'm probably more northern than most on here, having been born in Carlisle (just the right side of the border ;-) ), but been a shandy drinking* southern wuss for most of my life :).

Thanks again!

Eggs

Careful careful there's quite a few on here from the wrong side of the border ( Except John S who's from the DARK SIDE and makes EVIL SKELETOR look like a PUSSY ) thou to be honest most of them I've had dealings with speak with a funny accent and there's no "Oh siz yuzz Jimmy" in it.?? . . . Been either " Southern Jessy's" or " Texas rangers" . . . Lol

*Takes Bow*:eagerness:

A quick wit and an affinity with with arts of sarcasm go hand in hand when you wear body armour for a living.

I just need to learn the art of CNC, and I'll be on my way to CNC-Ninjadom, and global domination of my Garage.

Welcome to the forum Sir from someone who was born not to far north of where you live but now lives further north than you were born, yes over the dreaded border lol, I'm stuck here because my passports expired & they won't renew it lol.

As for being a southern shandy drinker, don't think so after 20 years in the RN

Thanks for all the welcomes chaps. Very heartening.

I'm currently hooking up a 3 axis stepper driver board (yep, the dreaded chinese cheapy), a small stepper (Aliexpress.com : Buy Best selling Nema 17 series hybrid stepping motor 42BYGHW609 40mm 3.4V 1.7A 3400g.cm 4wires from Reliable stepper motor suppliers on Wantmotor Official Store (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Best-selling-Nema-17-series-hybrid-stepping-motor-42BYGHW609-40mm-3-4V-1-7A-3400g-cm/708759_503814870.html) - 8 US bucks - sheesh!) and an old PC PSU. Just going to write a bit of Perl code with this: Device::ParallelPort - search.cpan.org (http://search.cpan.org/~scott/Device-ParallelPort-1.00/lib/Device/ParallelPort.pm) to do a bit of messing about - just want to learn about this stuff from the basics before confusing myself with EMC or something.

And there I thought Martin that you lived in CrossGates-LEEDS and only worked north of the border.... Now I see there is another CrossGates up north!

But it had struck me that you seemed quite tactful for a Yorkshire soul..... ;-)

Ho-ho. More like going to wait for my old Ubuntu PC to upgrade, work out what's happened to all the permissioning for downloading modules, work out how you get access to the parallel port and finally write a really noddy test program. That's it. I need some kip :)
