Hi everyone,

I am new to the CNC world, I have a few manual machines. I am designing my first CNC machine, which will be the vertical milling type. One thing I am struggling with is the spindle. Is a router motor suitable for use when the machine is intended for use with metals such as brass, steel, stainless steel, titanium, etc? I am into making watch parts, so it won't be big, I was thinking in the region of 200mm travels for this machine.

Many thanks,

No router is far too fast for most Metals. Certainly less than ideal for Steel and completely useless for stainless and Titanium.

Separate spindle and motor attached by belt drive is your best option, like milling machines do it. If you have access to a lathe then it's not difficult to build your own using an ER collet spindle.

Thats useful to know! I do have access to a lathe so I could make one! I shall read posts on it!

Here you go check this out, just use a bigger ER collet Shaft.
