Hi all,
I'd like some advice on buying a good quality floor standing pillar drill, 1 phase, and capable of tapping.
We'll be buying new as it's for a business. I found this one on Ebay:
Baileigh Industrial DP-1000G Pillar Drill | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150999702132?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649)
This is the sort of drill we are after, lamp, decent size and tapping. Has anyone had any experience with Baileigh? Or a suggestion of another make?
Thanks

Hi,

I'd suggest going to view a baileigh showroom to see the quality. I've been before when after equipment and the quality of their stuff varies. Personally, I'd always buy and older machine because you can't buy the same sort of quality new without spending a fortune. On the older stuff good names to look out for are Fobco and Meddings, I think they both made versions with geared heads to get the lower speeds for tapping. A new brand I'd avoid are Chester UK, their stuff is utter crap! Alot of schools and colleges tend to buy warco, but I haven't had any experience with the newer stuff myself.

You might be better off buying a smallish radial arm drill. As said above, an older machine will often be built to a much higher standard.

Meddings or maybe an old Startrite if you can find one. I've got a Meddings MF10 I think it is, lovely old machine. Bit noisy now but works great and they last forever.

Been at a couple of engineering liquidations, notable was among all the high tech gear was the Startrite and Meddings drills in the tool room.

Might try giving Meddings a ring.
I have just sold them back an articulated arm drill for refurb.
I gather they do this all the while.
