Hi Guys,

I'm trying to make a very simple circuit board for my PI tank the first thing I want to add to it is the GPIO interface which is just this..
8877

So I download Eagle CAD watched some tutorials and came up with this replication

8878

But as you can see when I go to circuit layout it doesn't attached or route the parts the same as the one above .. anyone know why please ?

8879

Am I just being dumb and this is the correct routing ?

8881

Because it doesn't look like that on Ian's ?

8882

I want to add all the small circuits on the diagram into one board so I can house it in a box.

8880

fivetide,
Unless I am missing something, and probably am,
this one shows the "air routed lines" and you can still move the various "parts" such as pads to different physical locations on the board by click and dragging where you want. Then hit the "ratsnest" icon and it will reroute the air lines in case you have a mess. Then you can to the final routing either by auto route or manual routing to get the "blue traces" that are the actual traces you want on the board.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bubba, it was more the fact that R1 is routed to the center pin on the NPN , because that don't follow what I thought I had sketched .. or is the right pin the center pin when you go to the PCB layout ?

fivetide,
I "think" your confusing the schematic symbol and the physical symbol. From the data sheet that I pulled, you can see the "base" is pin 3 and from what I am understanding your concern, you think the base should be pin 2? I believe you have things shown correctly per the schematic that you put up. And here is the full cutsheet http://www.kitsandparts.com/BD139-16.pdf

Hi Bubba thanks for your reply's .. the part I'm using is RS-Part (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/bipolar-transistors/0294312/?searchTerm=294-312&relevancy-data=636F3D3126696E3D4931384E525353746F636B4E756D6 265724D504E266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C267 06D3D5E5C647B337D5B5C732D2F255C2E2C5D5C647B332C347 D2426706F3D313426736E3D592673743D52535F53544F434B5 F4E554D424552267573743D3239342D3331322677633D4E4F4 E4526) is it still the same layout ? Only the picture of the board Ian did looks like it follows the same tracks in real life ? if your right then what looks like the center pin is the right pin ?

fivetide,
I looked at your schematic to find the part number BD139 and then did a google on that number. This is an industry standard part number. HOWEVER, I just looked up the part number you referenced above and it is a 2N3904.
Now looking at its pinout, and I can see the confusion!. It indeed does have the base in the center pin! You need to change the part no in your schematic to the correct one for the transistor that you have.
Here is the url to the cut sheet that I have ref'd:

fivetide,
Anytime my friend as I have been there done that and have the tee shirt to prove it!

NEVER take anything for granted and then double check as you will usually be wrong.

Don't ask:})

Thanks Bubba, lol I love your name ! in fact I ended up watching one of my all-time favourite moves late last night, Forest Gump, because of the BubbaGump Shrimp thing !

Anyway onwards and upwards .. I’m now (because I’m a noob to electronics) struggling with finding the Recom R-788 0-1.0 and R-&8b5 0-1.5 or something similar to put on the board .. any ideas what I can use from the eagle cad libraries ? there’s only really those two parts all the rest is wiring to them.

I am not familiar with either one of those devices so can't really help you. I did find a while back on youtube a tutorial on how to build up your own devices for eagle. So far, my success at doing this is limited (I am new to Eagle). There is also a yahoo group that deals with Eagle and you might check into that and see if anybody has done what you need.
As for the moniker, many years ago several of us that worked together had a project manager who called everybody bubba. Well, I lived in the country and another lived in the city so that is how we got distinguished when he called for bubba! LOL

generally when working with Eagle I try to avoid specific parts for passive components unless there is a good reason. for resistors i generally use the library template for a generic 1/4w metal film which gives a suitable hole spacing. otherwise you can waste hours trying to match manufacturers parts to the library....

when i first started with eagle I used to search for hours trying to find the right library part....being of a lazy ilk - rather than face the time consuming effort that creating n Eagle part from scratch is - it occurred to me, there are only so many tranny/IC/passive packages in exsitence, so there's likely to be an eagle part for a totally different named part out there that fits the need.

That first part you mention....Recom R-788 0-1.0 ...from the datasheet, it's a regulator with 0.1" pitch leg spacing? So I googled the most common regulator on the planet a 780x regulator...and sure enough it's 0.1" pitch & has the same pin layout (pin 1 in, pin 2 ground, pin 3 output)....so you can be lazy too & just use a 7809 on your schem! (you might want to double check my lightning googling research on this ...can't be held responsible for your pcb not working blah blah!)
