I'm interested in making one,

from what I gather it's just a plate with some aligning shafts and compression springs to force it onto the work piece.

but what material should I use for the base?

I was thinking something soft but not something that will trap swarf.

maybe furniture sliders?

mouse mat / under mouse friction material? :S

really not sure.
