just a quick note on my build I decided to go with a belt drive, the reason is I am not that mobile and it enables me to get closer without a steper boring in to you , it also makes it a bit more compact.
up to now. I have got it moving under its own steam but am unhapy with the play I have in the X Y screws. I have ballraced them all and used two sets of thrust bearings, they are very smothe andare nice to use under manual control but there is some play in the nuts, I want to replace them befor I go for full cnc so am just using it with a controle box a friend made .
hear are a few pictures if they work

Looks like a good candidate for a roller nut :)

The problem I have is there is very little ckearence for the standar nuts so I dont think I would be able to go down that route.

Peter,
On the other side of the nut from the 2 adjusting screws drill and tap for two more so you have 4 all on the same face.
then get a piece of 3/8" thick Delrin and bore a hole in it centrally equal to the bottom diameter of the thread and bolt this onto the face of the nut block.

then get a small dremel grinding disk and cut a couple of slot into the end of the thread at the opposite end to the drive. it won't hurt the thread as it never gets that far up.
Use this as a tap to force a thread into the delrin, then lubricate and assemble in the normal way.
The elastic properties of the Delrin will help reduce backlash and give some sort of preload to the thread.

Not a perfect answer to your problem but a cheap one.
