Can you extend CY cable ( 4 core / 2 core ) by soldering and heat shrinking the individual wires plus the screen? Or is it just run a new length?

Thanks

Yes you can and provided it's not at flexing joint it will be fine. (Stagger the cable lengths so each joint is in differant place this way you won't end with big fat joint)

Thanks, any tips on joining the shield to keep the shielding continuous and still a shield?

Thanks again

I was wondering (not a recommendation) about heat shrink solder connectors, a foil wrap and ordinary heat shrink as a cover.

Just solder together or connect with short piece of wire and Shrink wrap over top.!

cool so the shield is still effective over the join even though its not wrapped completely round the cables.

thanks for the tip regarding the staggering of the joints :)

No it's not effective at all over the join ... but it's not like anyone going to test your machine for EMI anyway, so who cares.

Not really what you'd call effective shielding at the joint but it keeps continuity to ground so any shielding losses are pretty irrelivant at DIY level.

Edit: Didn't see Jon posts which says it all really.
