View Full Version : Potential coolant system : Will it work?

Hi, I'm just building my router type milling machine and I'm just looking for possible solutions for later in the build.
Right now I'm thinking of coolant delivery, well more spray delivery and I have come across these air pumps on ebay
16338
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271963583126?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&var=570793540268&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

And also these
16340
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251976524003?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Now I know that the pump is rated for continuous use with 4200 litres an hour, just over a litre per second but I cant see what PSI it gives so I'm wondering if anyone has tried these together and if so do they work and If not do you have any cheap solutions of your own?

Cheers, Charlie

Seem to remember someone selling those two as a set not long ago. They should work fine.

I bought one of those misting nozzle kits, not impressed with it - its a mister and creates a cloud, I am going to build a fogless coolant system instead.

Forgot about this, but just for future reference if anyone else thinks of trying this....DON'T!! The pump just isn't suitable, if I start to syphon the coolant then the pump will draw it through but its ore like a trickly jet if thats a real thing! definately no mist and I'd argues at the stated output of that air pump.
Oh well, it was a cheap enough experiment.
Cheers, Charlie

It happens;)

I wasted a bit yesterday in thinking an air-line lubricator might work - it didn't. Seems they only inject the fluid when the tool stops and starts, a constant flow does nothing, ah well.

Will just have to build the proper unit.

The manifold was made from a hex piece of brass bar.179961799717998

Nice, I have most of the parts, just need the time to build :)

Whats a good fluid for aluminium cutting??

WD I can get but cant remember seeing paraffin anywhere round me for years now;)

Yep, used to see it a lot years ago.

White spirit any good?

yes but where can you buy it?

yes but where can you buy it?

Most Farming or heating fuel suppliers will stock it. . . . It's basicly low grade Diesil.

ok, thanks, I gather we are talking mostly paraffin in the mix - 10% oil or more?

I have one of those misters as in post #1, I am going to try it with a solenoid valve to pulse the air, using an Arduino to control it via a relay, so I can experiment with pulse and space times. It won't be until I have built my machine though, later this year.

That would likely work ok, but set the jet in the nozzle so that it makes droplets not mist, will need to pressurise the fluid container as well.

Well I made a Fog-Buster style unit and it does a pretty god job of fogging the shop up :(

What do we need to do to it to stop it fogging and start it splattering?

I'm using a 0.6 mig tip, maybe too small? might run a drill up it and see what happens, It also only works wit two pressure regulators - the fluid must be set higher than the air blast.

Did you see the dxf post #6 I use one reg on the compressor and one into the container. You do need a needle valve as well.

Different shape but essentially the same, I followed dimensions I found online, 2.2mm through-bore with 1mm fluid bore, I have a flow control on the fluid inlet, one regulator on the fluid feed and one on the air feed.

I think the nozzle is too small at 0.6mm, I will drill out to 1mm and try that - it should reduce air velocity and increase droplet size hopefully.

Edit

Just been looking at the Original Fog-Buster web site an they have no nozzle at all - just a plain tube so I might just cut the nozzle off and try that.

Isn't a mist spray of paraffin a ghastly accident looking for ignition?

Not saying you shouldn't, but I nearly lost my eyebrows spark eroding with paraffin electrolyte when I broke through in to a cavity.

Lots of small garages still stock paraffin, make an effort and you'll find a cheap source of cutting lube.

I found it in the end ;)

Yes i have doubts about the safety of such things but there are people running alcohol, methylated spirits and all manner of deadly stuff on misters - the mind boggles.

That was one of the reasons i did not want to fog mist it - bigger droplets are harder to ignite.

WD40 seems popular, ignites just as easily and is just as flamable but smells a little nicer.

Nobody seems worried about breathing the stuff. You really need to run these things in an enclosure, with an extractor fan to the outside air (but you are not supposed to do that if you are industrial:beaten:)

I might just change to suds - either mist or flood.

Cutting the nozzle off seems to have helped stopped the fog but need to see if it still clears the chips.

The mess that these machines create surprised me, I'm used to manual milling which can throw chips at times but these tend to disappear in a cloud of chips all round ;)

And you wouldn't believe how many people use little machines like these in spare bedrooms and cutting MDF.!!!!!
