My operating system is Win7 64bit, which took an age to shut down. It was reporting it was waiting to close an open program, but did not list what it was. After a bit of detective work, disabling processes and restarting the computer, I found that the DraftSight had a running task (presumably checking for updates) which was cluttering the shutdown.
If anyone has a similar problem, I will post more details.
