Hi, call me Steve or Paddy.

I was apprenticed at Westland Helicopters (1975-1984) and have workwith with Carbon Fibre ever since.

I built my first winding machine, to make tubes, etc. in the late 80’s, initially a 2 axis mechanical beast with chains everywhere but after numerous mod’s and rebuilds the machine is currently 4 axis, computer controlled, capable of winding onto mandrels up to 4 Metres long and/or approx 600mm dia.

Untill recently it was controlled by custom software written in Pascal and 6502 assembler running on a circa 1984 Apple ][.
I now have PC hardware connected and several combinations of Software/Hardware available for trials and have started to program in G-code, etc. but for older jobs I can still use the Apple.

I have also been helping a chap next door to complete the conversion of an Interact 4 to run on Mach3, nearly finished.

Not sure I'm qualified to have any sort of opinion but workpiece access is a bit restricted, and I can imagine any flex or vibration having odd effects due to the structure.

Hi all,
I am looking for replacement ballscrew for my Boxford 260VMC. The screws curently fitted are OK but could be better...
The problem is these are 14mm with 2.5mm pitch, not really a common thing these days. Also the nuts are threaded type that screw into the machine.

I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone here could answer... :-)

1- Would I loose in torque is I use a ballscrew with a 4mm pitch instead of the current 2.5mm pitch ?
2- Anybody ever use these guys for ballscrew: http://www.mooreinternational.co.uk/...8/FGR14X4.html
3- Any other place I could find this kind of Ballscrew?

Ta,

Hello,

My issue is when i import my part from Autodesk inventor using several exporting formals including IGS, STEP, DWG & STL that when the part imports and all looks well when i come to select a boundry almost all round faces are split into several smaller arches.

Okay so thats not a major issue i can just select all untill i have a full circle, but no - It will not accept any boundry.

When i want to machine a particular part of the model i will select th eportion i want the toolpath to take, but when i do it still selects the entire model.

Now all the above is done in 3d mill mode.

My next (well more of a continuation) issue is when i come to use 2d milling.

A similar part i want to machine in 2D again import the part (the drawing is in the 3d but i assume since i am not selecting 3d faces it should be ok?) now this time because of the previous issue in not being able to select boundrays this time it does not let me select the face or line i want to machine.

For example i import a round circle and want to pocket it, no matter which edge i select it just does not accept.

I do thefollowing 'select geomatry' right clock and 'ok' to confirm however, after conformation it just doesn't accept the selection of the part i want to machine, and its the same issue with the boundry.

Now then, if i draw a part in bobcad all seems to work fine, however alot of my files are made in inventor and my choice of CAD software, mainly because i find it the easiest to use.

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I'm new to CNC machining and a friend and I have bought a chinese cnc machine from ebay ( like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2907045318...#ht_2396wt_934 from the same seller) I don't really know exactly what model it is, there are no numbers on it or anything (I know, I know apologies for being a useless n00b)

I've been using the machine on and off to make various bits and pieces and am running into problems with the z axis, every now and again (but often enough to be problematic!) the Z axis will ram down by about 10mm, usually snapping the bit and wrecking the piece. I have run the same g-code and it has worked fine, so I am assuming it's not a problem there.

I had a look through the forum and found this post :
www.mycncuk.com/forums/showthread.php/1395-
Z-Problem but it's from 2009 and wasn't resolved. He was having the same problem as me.

I've tried tightening the coupler which seemed pretty tight anyway, so I am assuming the motor is over running for some reason.

I guess by looking around the forum that it's probably the controller? The problem is I really don't know what I am looking for to test/replace/fix it. I don't even know which one of the controllers it is! Is it a controller or a driver that I mean (there are 3 of them with dip switches on)?

Any help and general advice (links to other posts etc.) would be very gratefully received. I can't leave the machine to do its thing without hovering a few mm from the stop button!

Thanks.

Having found my favourite prototype material, Celotex, PIR insulating foam, its cheap, easily available and holds reasonable detail.

Foil peels off the foil coated faced easily.

Mistake in programming or machine crash won`t instantly snap a tool either :-)

What have noticed is the crumbs tend to collect around the spindle nose and on the side frames of the gantry.

Wondering if anyone has made electrostatic crumb attraction to get the foam chips to gather together?

Cheers
