Hi
What die do I need to put a thread on a SS shaft, the thread is metric and has a reading of 10mm on my caliper.
I think it would be 9mm die but need to be sure before I buy one as I have seen 9.5mm ones as well.
Thanks.

could you clarify the dimension 9mm or 95mm you are talking about. to make a m10 thread you need a m10 die
Daniel,
you need to measure the thread, the TPI (threads per inch) as well as the diameter to find out what you need. At 10mm you could have either a 1.5mm thread or a 1mm thread. 9mm would not be a standard thread.
If you need die nuts send me a PM.

A 9mm(M9) is a standard thread just not very common, i know i have them on my lathe :-(
M10 x 1mm is not very common either Daniel the post common would be M10 x 1.5mm.
2e0poz,
thats what I meant to say. Just the most common or standard threads would be 6, 8 or 10. Although I do have a set of 7mm x 1mm somewhere that I used for repairing an old machine which was scrapped a while ago. One day they might come in useful again.
10mm x 1mm or metric fine I come across alot. It seems to be quite common on some machines.
I went through every screw tap in imperial sizes before i found out, it was real pain because i was not expecting a 9mm thread. His thread would be a 10 though as thread itself would be just under. Zeus guide is mans best friend in the workshop
