Whilst stripping my machine for cleaning, I took the gas strut off and noticed it was more like a slide whistle with zero resistance!!

Anyone replaced one on their machine? THe label on my strust is badly worn and torn. Not sure if it would help is I had any figures from it.

I could try a generic one BUT I really don't know what force is required. Anyone got any suggestions?

Should anyone wish to buy a gas strut (there are many suppliers) you need one that is rated at 400N. This seems to be the correct rating as when fitted all works well.
I was advised to install the gas strut/spring upside down - ie the rod at the bottom - as this enables oil in the unit to help the seals.
