Thanks for the feedback. I've been looking into the suggestions today and am currently leaning towards a toroidal transformer and drives that accept AC so that I can drive motors at 60-65VAC (and am probably also leaning towards the 5.5Nm closed loop motors). From what I read today about unregulated power supplies, this seems like a good option, but I am still learning and have limited electrical experience, but am willing to take it on.

I'm currently searching for a reference design for a toroidal transformer - I'm willing to build one but need good guidance to help with the calculations, components, wiring, etc..

If you are going with AC drives then you don't need to build anything this is the beauty of AC drives, you just buy a toroidal transformer and pull directly from the secondary outputs. The only thing you need to do is decide how you are going to use the secondary outputs. This will be based on the spec of the Toroidal transformer you buy.

If your not sure what I'm meaning just say and I will explain exactly what I mean and provide a diagram showing how it's done.

Even building a DC supply using a toroidal transformer isn't difficult but does require sizing components correctly to give the required output. But the actual building or wiring side of it is very simple, you don't need to be an electrical Wizzard. Again I will happily help you chose the correct components when you know what you require and decide on using a DC supply..
I've helped 100's of people with Zero electrical knowledge build them so don't be phased it's easy enough.

    Hi Dean

Many thanks for the offer. I have little experience in electrical design and no idea on how to safely build this, so your help will be much appreciated. I'm working on narrowing some of my options and will reach out once I'm ready.

    Hi All / Dean

After some additional consideration, I've now decided to get thes 5.5Nm motors and drivers from AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3279...c008xEitI&mp=1

As for the toroidal, I'm looking for > 600VA, 60-65VAC but these seem quite more expensive than the 500VA units: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/toroi...rmers/7529444/

Looking at this one from AliExpress, but the shipping is quite hefty: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000...c008xEitI&mp=1

Any suggestions on UK/EU based suppliers?

Ian before buying the Lichuan drives/motors or WC spindle contact me if you are not in a hurry and can wait until around Dec time as I have a shipment of both coming and will let you have them at a good price. I'll set the VFD up for you before sending it.

Hi Dean - thanx for the offer but I need to have the machine up and running soonest - in the next 3-4 weeks as work timelines are creeping up on me.
