I have a Denford Triac Milling Machine (The model which uses stepper motors) I would like to convert to Mac3 and control the machine from a PC
Can I use the existing drives and power supply or do I need to start from scratch?
    Any help would be appreciated

  2. Dave, welcome

The short answer is 'probably, as far as stepper motors are concerned and power supply, but not the actual stepper drivers unless you can identify step/direction/enable lines to them'

The longer answer is 'it depends on the motors as to what drivers are likely to be applicable, and given motors and good spec drivers are cheap you might be better off replacing them with small faster more modern motors matched to a good driver - more reliability, less heat and noise, easier to get it working'

    Dave,
Keep the power supply, motors, relay and spindle speed board and dump the rest.
Done about 10 or 12 now.

3 drivers from ARC on left, breakout board and logic power supply on right.

Old post .... sorry, but does this apply to the Denford Triac PC mill? I have the option to buy one, trying to determine costs to retrofit cheaply or splash out and do servos etc.

Forget servos, steppers will be fine for most things. As I said already you can probably get 3 drivers and a BoB for under 200 squids if you use the existing power supply and spindle board and buy judiciously on eBay.

So I have managed to get a Triac VMC. Looks like it has servos all round. Very keen to hear your comments based on your experience on what it will take to get it up and running.

Are the motors reusable? What about the drives?

Hi, Do you have “baldor D281 motion control card for a Triac P. C. (denford), red 7-segment LED display type. The firmware is ESMINT 3.28 V1.6H/S - JD5.” Cheers.

Chaz, I got a Novamill with steppers but without electronics and updated it to use modern drives. It was very straightforward, almost everything (BoB, stepper drivers, power supply) came from China via eBay for less than £200; or you can buy complete boxes with drives etc.
