Simple question...is CY 4 core cable or SY cable better suited for stepper motors where the motors are moving?

    I've found this information:
    http://www.cycable.co.uk/
    http://www.sycable.co.uk/

but I think it's a bit ambiguous. I'd prefer to buy SY since it's cheaper...

    Thanks in advance,

  2. Neither are ideal for high motion use, but if you had to choose take the CY as its better where continuous movement is required due to the stranded conductors. The SY has solid annealed copper, is also thicker (8.5mm v 7mm for 4core 1.0mm2) and has galvanised steel braiding instead of tinned copper braiding.

the 4 x 0.75mm2 is good for up to 8A motors

Ok, thanks for that. What cable would you suggest for high motion use, bearing in mind my cable runs are going to have to be quite long.

I was going to get 1.5mm^2 (with 4.2A motors..) since the price difference is not much, and it's nice to keep the voltage drop as low as possible.

Just worked out that I need about 30m of cable for my router!
The longest cable will be roughly 6m ... is that going to cause a problem? I could save about 8m if I either move the computer, or extend the parallel cable. What's worse extra wire on the parallel or the same on each stepper motor?

  5. will make little dfference, resistance of that wire is 26ohm per km so an extra couple of m is .05ohm, at 4.2A is 0,1v drop. best to keep parallel cable shorter...

there is a cable called extraflex, it's used on meters and is 1.0mm2 this handles movement execptionally well.

Farnells code for it is 135331

That does look good with regard to movement, but seeing as I need 4 cores that works out at £3.43/m ... a lot!

I reckon I'll just buy the 30m of the 1.5mm^2 CY cable. I've spent far too much time looking at cables! Might get a 50m reel and sell the excess...

    Thanks for all the advice.
