    My first guess would be an electrolytic has dried out. I have performed miracles in the past simply by changing electrolytics.

    You don't but an electrolytic you only rent it :D

    I'll get the scope on it over the weekend and see how the supply rail is holding up... Cant be far off tho as as soon as power is applied the axes lock solid. I need to get a prototyping Euroboard to allow me access to all the signals on the backplane, I was only bit-banging the step-lines individually using some wire poked in the holes in the socket to connect to the BOB. Worked tho :D
