    So maybe if I decide to go down the route of buying a USB parallel emulator, which one should I get - I've heard of SmoothStepper but have seen others too.

    Only ones I know of for CNC use are the SmoothStepper, and the ncPod.
    However nothing has been heard of from the ncPod guy for quite some time.

    The SS seems to be the way to go just now.
    If you register on the SS website - www.warp9td.com - you'll get access to the forum (I'm pretty sure it's hidden unless you're registered).
    There'a also support forums on the machsupport site for the ncPod and SS, which are pretty active.
