Calculating Stepper Motor Power? Strength?

I'm after a little help understanding how I should select the correct stepper or servo motor based on the required power / speed and the application.

I know drive should also be considered e.g. ball screw, rack and pinion etc.

I'm after the understanding of the process I should go through to ensure I select the correct type of drive.
