I've read that 5mm seems to be the preferred size for pulleys, is there any specific reason for this? Would 3mm (15mm wide) cause any problems as I cant seem to squeeze 5mm pulleys (20t &40t) into the space I have available while keeping the number of teeth engaged at a reasonable number.

    Any thoughts?

Mainly because there more common and cost effective.! . . . 3mm will be fine so long has the belt width and engaged teeth is kept.
