I'm after an 80mm lathe chuck with 3 or 4 jaws and self centering. It's to replace the one on my micro lathe which is missing the external jaws.

If no-ones got one I'll get this one.

    Thank you...

    That's cheap.
Everything he's selling you can buy cheaper elsewhere Except the two chucks ?

    Makes you wonder why ??

Yeah it is a good price relative to everyone else...fell off the back of a lorry perhaps. Do you reckon they'll have poor run-out or just be no good then?

No, I need it to be self centering. Thanks for looking anyway...

If one doesn't come up by the end of next week I'll get the cheap one I linked to earlier.

I have no idea what self centering is anyway, I know nothing about lathes. Which is why I was searching ebay for a mini one :) I think its time I got one rather than using the router in funny ways.

Self centering means when you turn the chuck key all the jaws move at the same time. They're generally used when it's not critical to have the part concentric after taking it out of the chuck and putting back in, since most will only be repeatable to a few hundredths of a millimetre. If you do need to hold the part with virtually zero runout, then a 4-jaw independent chuck can be used as you can move each jaw separately and use an indicator to get the part on centre. They're also good for holding irregular shaped parts, but take longer than self centering chucks to set up.

It's surprisingly not much more money to get a decent size lathe, and they perform much much better, so if you have the room it's worth considering.

Any brand or model to look out for, I dont have massive amounts of space but should have enough for a mid sized lathe.

Smart and Brown lathes come up occasionally on ebay for £500 - £2000, some of the best lathes ever made and would cost as much a house new. Downside is you have to figure out how to transport a ton and half of iron to your shed, which is why they are always cheap...

You can always check on Lathes for lathes specs and they also have a for sale board.
