Thread: crazy idea

I had a dream last night, we've all seen the challenges we face building these machine frames and ensuring they are strong enough/ and straight enough etc. then once made we wish we had made them stronger.

why would you not make a big wooden box, situate it where you wish the machine to stay for the rest of eternity, then fill the box to desired level with wet cement / re-bar

once dry, remove box and start building off that (ie, mount your rails directly to the concretre block)

perfectly flat (because of gravity) no resonance no flex. Im sure there is a massive reason why not but thought id ask just to satisfy my mind

It would work within reason for low accuracy machines like cutting wood etc but Because concrete takes an age to settle down and will slowly change shape it's not a good idea for higher accuracy machines.

I built a Granite shaping/cutting/polishing gantry for my mate which ran on 6ft high concrete block walls with 10x8ft bed which was made using concrete floor beams with concrete block in fills then levelled with Epoxy..!!

If I was building a wood only machine and had the room with no desire to move it then I would probably take this route has it's easy and cheap using concrete blocks and epoxy.!!
