do you need a z axis?

I have no real knowledge of plasma but have seen torch height control mentioned several times, there seems to be manual and automatic versions. Some reading here Torch Height Control for Plasma Cutting
If you think about stick welding for example, with other variables constant such as amps, rod diameter, metal thickness, the rod distance still has to be continually adjusted to maintain a proper arc.

Spelling mistakes are not intentional, I only seem to see them some time after I've posted

If you always start at an edge you don't need to back off to pierce height.

If your torch rests on the surrounding plate and has a crude mechanism to back it off to pierce height you can cut any thickness.

Torch height control is usually for people who think they can make a perfectly flat bed using welding irons and cheap box section, then discover they cannot.

ahh, what I mean is I just want a tiny weenie little plasma table 600mm x
500mm y - I have the tiny festo linear thing for that
don't want any weight at the z axis is all, was thinking of a 1 metre long screw driver extension think then to controll the up and down of the torch, in a big arc up and down and habe the air and power wrapped aroung that. Then I can stick it to the y with a magnet and dis-connect everything and make the thing quite light and portable even.
