Hi, does this work with mach3 or requires its own software? does it work if connected to any network point ( for example conencted to a router or to a switch ) ? or does it need a dedicated lan card or lan slot in the PC's motherboard?

    thanks

how is the performance on these smooth steppers (if anyone could answer I'd appreciate)

    Hi,

The boards work exclusively with Mach3 at the moment. Some movement has been made on getting them to work with mach4 but I am still holding off that program.

You will not need a dedicated lan card although the smooth steppers ip address must be in the same domain as the pc you are using. For example, as standard the ip of the board is something like 10.02.30.78. You can easily change that to a more normal 192.168.1.50 if you want. I can do that for you if need be. This address is then static so you can plug it into a router. While experimenting i also had the machine plugged into a router and the pc connected wirelessly, this may not be safest option but it works.

As for performace, all i will say is that in my own experience it work very well. I am hoping others less biased will also chime in here.

The point to make though is that the value for money is very good on these boards.

Less biased than who.?. . .Me for instance.!!

My bias isn't based on performance or price it's based on expereince with software and the company that produce that software.! Warp 9.
The software plug-in for any motion controller is key and if it's not supported well enough by the supplier then it's bad news. For instance Mach3 is coming to the end of it's days and yet still Warp9 haven't fixed loads of the issues or implemented features that should have been many years ago, like Lathe mode. For god sakes it's still in affect in beta version.!!
Thou in fairness not all this is Warp 9's fault and some of the blame falls with Artsoft. But still Greg at Warp 9 is far to slack and slow with updates or fixes and IME doesn't really give a shit.!!. . . Takes lots of people jumping up n down to get anything fixed or implimented and even then it's when he can be bothered.!

Performance wise the ESS works great with a decent breakout board attached.
Price wise it's fair but when spending this much money with such a specialised piece of hardware who's performance is so closely linked to the software that is the brains of the outfit then the whole picture should be considered in my experience.!!

Would I use or buy one YES I do buy and use them.! . . . . Is it my first choice Hell no.! It's a reluctant and close second to purelogic and in both cases only when I can't use Cslabs stuff for cost reasons.!
