    Lee, dont recall if i posted this, but there's a great set of tutorial videos for newbies from MIT TechTv here. Videos 1 -3 are basic machine shop, 4 - 7 are setup & use of mill and 8 - 10 are setup & use of lathe. Might be worth copying them down in case they vanish...
