Hi
I would like to present you the 2nd version of desktop size router designed by myself in SW.
Hoping to mill aluminium as hardest material.


Parameters:
Working area 320x250x100mm (X.Y.Z)
Hiwin, HSR or THK 15mm blocks on Z
Hiwin, HSR or THK 15 or 20mm blocks on X
Hiwin, HSR or THK 15mm blocks on Y
3A steppers (8 cables bipolar parallel) Nema 23
Ballscre RM1605
Belts HDT 15 T20 1:1
Spindle Chinese 1.5KW water cooled
frame box 50x50x4mm
Digital drivers
CSMio/IM-M
Torus trafo 420
Soft start
Pliz safety relay
AB 24V DC
Power relay

I am limited with working size due to size of Milling machine.
All will be tig welded work started, but need your opinion before is too late.

Looks good Tom. Are the gantry sides aluminium profile or lots of steel box sections joined together? Needs to be steel to get maximum stiffness on this critical area.

Looks good, I'd beef up the bed as it looks weak compared to the rest of your machine 😊

Neil, do you mean T-slot table or frame where blocks seats?

The other weak link will be the spindle clamp. Needs more clamping area or clamp top/bottom.

T slot table, put the table on a frame or something solid, otherwise you'll get deflection and vibrations and poor finish....

You have the rails bolted to the table, a very good start.

Second picture you go wrong. Your mind is stuck in 2D and it has put a terrible overhang on the router to gantry connection and compelled you to move the bed bearings out from under the gantry creating the awful L shape.

There is no reason why the Z axis slides have to clear the router head, they can go either side of it.

Do it again and think overhangs, think 3D :thumsup:

Robin think you better explain because even I can't tell where your coming from with this statement.? If your meaning what I think where is going to put the ballscrew.?

I can't explain, I should probably shut up, it just looks unfinished. If the router moved back towards the gantry it would look better. If the lower Z axis bearings were at the bottom of the gantry it would look better. If the bed bearings were under the gantry so it didn't depend on verticals screwed to horizontals I would be rubbing my hands together in glee and shouting whoopy do! :very_drunk:

Robin do appreciate your comments, so far I managed to skim 10mm by putting spindle closer to the plate.
Problem is that I should ask first and fabricate later. I am seating on it now - previous correction was easier to do.
I will put X axis bearing on top and bottom of the gantry - saving a lot of distance but sacrifice stiffens (extra 50mm taller legs)
Regard the bed bearings as you see from current design they are in between spindle center point - so perfect position (this will moved towards gantry later).

I managed to short less than 50mm in overhang - hope will be worth it.
