View Full Version : Workshop growing nicely

Well after a couple of negative posts I have shared about when stuff has gone wrong... I thought I'd share some better news.

The workshop is coming on well, I now have in the garage a range of second hand stuff:

Denford novamill
Denford Starturn 8 (with ATC post)
Hydrovane 5
some tooling for both (not much, but I get the sense with tooling that you can;t have too much :D )
Some basic measuring equipment (calipers, surface gauge etc) some new, most 2nd hand

On the way I have:

Granite surface block
improved lights (LED panels -new)
Metal Bandsaw
A new workbench (cheap steel one with chip board top - new)

I have successfully cut on my mill, though it didn't end well, as the air in my super noisy tiny compressor ran out, and it was switched off so as not to wake the dead, and so I managed to knacker another end mill ... hence the hydrovane.

The lathe is on the floor still, as my garage is a cluttered mess - I am waiting for a friend to remove their box trailer so I get half of it back, then I'll be doing a big clear out, sorting some more wiring/sockets, new LED lights, then I'll place all the equipment.

I think setting up is going to take a few months, but will be worth it when I have a sorted workshop.

I have spent loads more than I thought I would, but already have a few people asking me to make parts for them which is great - just need to get set up so I can start to offset some of the costs.

I'm working on a fogbuster style alternative to flood coolant, and will keep you posted if I manage to get the concept working.

We need pics sooner than that Dangle.
Pics of the real world when things are untidy and messy and even still in boxes gives a far better timeline for reminiscing later on. Personally I follow any workshop build with great interest, but it needs to be warts and all.:courage:

there are garage warts, and then there is gonorrhea, and no one wants to look at photos of that :friendly_wink:

Even if you have Garage S&D the guys here want photos - or it didn't happen ;-)

To inspire warts and all, I do some quick pics and a vid for good measure. Half of my garage has been cleaned, the other half looks like a warzone. Maybe we need a garage / workshop pic appreciation thread :-)

So, no vid. It's piss cold outside, so just snapped some pics quick.

And finally, my bike needs a clean (and a ride). Very dusty due to the concrete grinding I've been doing outside on Thor.

Gonna need a bigger boa... garage!

seems I have been shamed into it.

Sorry for the crap photos, and after seeing how good some of that kit looks in other peoples garages I'm not sure I want to share my poor relation kit :witless:20237202342023320236202352023720234202332 023620235

Plan is to do a big clear out, put up new work bench, clear out old work bench and have lathe on the 2nd one, and control units/PC's on the shelf underneath (hopefully cables will reach!)

Next will be welding up a few wheeled tables, one for the granite plate and one for the band saw so I can shift them round the workshop.

Then I will plumb in the new air compressor into some semi perm lines, also adding in my new lights (LED panels) and sockets around the garage.

Finally I plan to dramatically cut down on the stuff stored on shelves, and instead buy a few cheap steel tables, stack them on top of each other and secure together, create a lower skid on wheels that the lower table sits in, then use some cheap roofing sheet (painted steel) to turn them into large mobile cupboards - that way I have the same storage, but it can be moved round the garage unlike shelves - I plan to be doing CNC woodwork and CNC metal work and some motorcycle maintenance (on my own bike), so I need to be able to shift stuff about as my garage isn;t big enough for all three as permenant set ups - but I can temporarily block in equipment I don't need.

I also added the only thing I have made on the novamill - it was a little computer game logo into a medallion for my little lad - just used some scrap galv steel sheet I had - dodgy work holding, but the vice crushed it and I dont have a sacrifical alu pallet etc yet - though it is on my list of things to make.

There's clear floor space!
Where do you find that?

Awesome, it can all be improved. I need to move Thor inside so the bit of space I have made will be lost but will need to manage somehow.

If only we all had those dreams:highly_amused:

Got the hydrovane up and running before, it is so quiet compared to my old cheapy compressor. No where near as loud as a vacuum cleaner, maybe a similar volume to a.hair dryer. Made up with it.

Little update video - will try to pull a series together over the coming months as I get more set up. This is my bandsaw cutting aluminium.
