Hello, I’m trying to set up my 6040 and I’m having problems with the VFD. I’m hoping you can help. I don’t have a manual and I have looked at some videos but can’t figure it out. I have figured out the power input wires(blue/brown/yellow greenish) but know I have the spindle wires to connect up. Some videos say I need to earth it (which I don’t know how) and others just connect up the three wires(UVW) I’m a moron at electrics. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Ok well to be sure you really should post some pictures so we can see what you have. However, regards the OUTPUT wires then usually you can connect any of the U V W wires in any order, then if the spindle spins the wrong way swap any 2 wires over. You don't usually need or even have an Earth on the Output side.
Obviously you need to connect the INPUT Mains Earth wire, also the cable going to the spindle should be a shielded cable and you take the Shield to the Mains Earth. Don't Gnd the shield at the spindle end.

However, to be sure before doing anything I suggest you show us what you have.

Wires to the left are power input in and the wires to the right are from the spindle. Sorry I had issues trying to upload pics. So I have the power sorted and now just need to figure the red, yellow and black wires on the right.

So can I put any of the red, yellow or black wires on any of the UVW screws and it will work and if the spindle is rotating the wrong way then I just change the wires around on the VFD ??

Yes - mains in brown and blue go to R and S. Grn/Yellow goes to the ground terminal no 9. Three wires to spindle go to UVW. If the spindle goes the wrong way, just swap over TWO of the spindle wires. Doesn't matter which two.

Ok well thank you Jazz. You have been a massive help. I don’t know if you know but I have to ask. Should I program the VFD. I have all the info needed to do it but I’m not sure if it will be preprogrammed. My direction would be to program the VFD and then follow your instructions to finish off the rest. I just don’t want to blow anything up or fry anything. What do you think ??

It takes just a few minutes to check the parameters so it's worth giving them a quick look at because not all are setup.

Ok so I have the control box and the VFD all hooked up and have power going to both of them. I can start the spindle up and control it with the VFD. I have a parallel port to CNC connection which I have inserted and I have downloaded mach3 and CNC usb. I would prefer to use the mach3 if I can as it’s easier to use. I followed the set up videos for mach3 and it’s not working. There is no power to the motors. Next problem to overcome ?? Anyone got any ideas ??

Do I need to plug in Via parallel port or can I run with CNCusb ?? I don’t really care how I go about it. I’m just looking to get it set up as best as possible and as fast as possible as I have projects coming up and this is my only machine lol if anybody is in the midland I will happily pay for anyone to come and sort it for me. Thank you again for any help and guidance

You're probably right - if you can find someone in the midlands then that would be the quickest way to get going.

Just a couple of thoughts for you...

You mention CNC USB - if that's the software from PlanetCNC - do you believe that this is compatible with your 6040? It's unusual to support that, and Mach3, and the board doesn't appear to be a PlanetCNC board.

Getting spindle speed control is generally straight forward if the board (Breadout Board, "BoB") supports this - but the images you've provided to date are not very clear. If supported, you'd have to change two parameters on the VFD as well (allowing spindle forward/reverse control over external wiring, and allowing spindle speed control over external wiring) to support this - that's straight forward, but you have a bigger issue of getting Mach3 working first.

You mention the spindle speed control through Mach3, but in the next breath mention motors (plural) not powered. I expect you're talking of the 3 axis stepper motors? Have you no control from Mach3 at all?, and are the motors unpowered (you can rotate them by hand), or just not moving (they've be very difficult to turn by hand if powered, unmoving). It's unusual, however, for the steppers to be unpowered outside of an e-stop situation.

It could be useful to explain exactly where you are here - it sounds like you've possibly recently obtained this machine - we need to understand your starting point, and what you have working, and how much you understand. I'm forming a view but it's too easy to overlook or guess at missing information.
