Hi,

I tried my spindle with a different VFD which has a pot on it and the spindle starts and spins at a slow setting but when I try to speed it up I get an overcurrent/short circuit error

If it was a short it wouldn't spin at all right?

It's the same speed every time that it cuts out at, F has a maximum of 65 I can set it to 12.something before it cuts out

The CY cable is 2.5mm cross section and 5m's long, brand new

I tested continuity from the aviation plug to all 4 sockets in the vfd GND, U, V and W and they are connected, no sign of a short. Pin 1, 2 & 3 connect to U, V, W and pin 4 to earth. Each soldered pin has insulation tape covering it

This spindle is brand new and wouldn't spin up with a HuanYang VFD

Both VFD's rated 2.2kw and it is a 2.2kw water cooled spindle

This is the VFD. I get error 1

If both vfd's do exactly the same. I'd say the motor is a duffer internally.

Are you wiring it correctly.? Which terminal are you connecting the spindle to.?

I wired my original spindle up with a short cable and it does the same thing and cut out at the same point

VFD counts up fine if you unplug the spindle

U, V, W to pin 1, 2, 3 on the spindle plug

I did an ohms test on both spindles

Testing 1-2, 2-3 & 1-3

I get 1.7, 1.7, 1.7 for the new spindle

And 1.8, 1.8, 1.8 for the old spindle

I read it should be 1.4-1.6 so I assume both these numbers are fine

Have you checked the parameters on the vfd like
PD005 400
PD006 2.5
PD007 0.5
PD008 230
PD072 400
PD073 120

PD141 230
PD142 10
PD143 2 poles
PD00144 3000

Hi,

i had the same problem over the last couple of days and spend a lot of time reading the VFD manual an testing different settings
I bought a new 1.5kW Spindle and a used Toshiba VSF9S-2015PL-WP on Ebay. This VFD has many more options than the usually accomaning ones, so it took me a while to get it working.

The important parameters where:
- upper frequncy limit (UL) and maximum frequency (FH): set to 400Hz.
- V/Fi control mode setting (Pt): set to constant. So a linear ramp up of the voltage to the max ramp up frequncy.
- torque boost (uB) to 0% for now. So no extra voltage for start-up and high loads.
- set base frequency (uL) also to 400Hz.

The last one was the most important. The default base frequency was set to 50 Hz and with that the max voltage was reached at 50Hz.
I think i will try to reduce this later on to get a bit more torque at lower RPM. But only after improving my cooling setup (which is non existant for testing) :).

I hope this helps
