Hi All, I am in the process of building a CNC dimensions over all is 1200 X 1000, working area is around 700 By 950 mm.
My problem is down to weight, will the motors carry or should I say lift it.
the Z axis actually lifts the whole Z and X axis, I plan to have two Nema23 steppers and 12 mm Ball screws slaved in Mach3, will this be enough.
The Y axix will also run on two steppers and Ball screws. thanks for any help.29985

Hi Ernie,

Well, you don't actually say what size Nema23 motors so it's hard to give an accurate answer. However, I have built several machines which lift the whole gantry like what you are planning that was made from 25mm Aluminium plate and much heavier than your MDF setup using 2 x 4Nm Nema 23 motors with 10mm pitch screws and they didn't even know they were lifting it.
So if you are using at least 2Nm with a decent amount of volts then I'm 99.9% sure you won't have any issues lifting an MDF gantry.

This one used a single 4.5Nm Nema 34 Closed-loop motor connected to the 2 x 10mm pitch screws with a belt and a slight ratio of 1:5.

Thanks Jasscnc, that is some machine you built there.
I am not sure of the type of stepper, the only markings are23HS22-2804S. the pitch of the rods is 4.
I used these motors with previous build , which was much smaller, and nowhere near as heavy.
Providing a need to upgrade the motors what would you suggest and what amount of volts. Thanks again.

I have taken some weight measurements, and must admit that they are suss, so have order a more reliable device. the weight that I arrived at was approx 4lbs. that was without the spindle which is a 2.2 kw air cooled. I have worked out an alternative design incase this is not viable.

Only 1.26Nm stall torque, so at the less powerful end of Nema23 steppers.

If you already have the motors, just try them.
Worst case scenario, you have to swap them for more powerful motors and possibly drivers depending on what you have just now.

Yes I do have the motors, but no problem I can use the elsewhere.
I am looking at Nema 23 3Nm 4 amp units.
Whats the thoughts on these.

I have bitten the bullet and ordered the motors, just hope they are suitable, if not it looks as though it's for the Bin, I have over spent as it is.

On the X and Z axis, would it be better to push it up, or lower it from above.
