New member needs some help

Hi I’m Paul Gutteridge from Birmingham great Barr.
I have just purchased a vm 260 cnc milling machine from a friend of mine who had it from a college of education.
I’m looking to purchase a laptop and boxford software cad cam design.
To run the Miller it was made in year 1993.
As I have not got a manual with the machine could anyone help me please I see it’s run by compressed air what is the air for and how does it assist the machine.
Also In putting the machine in manual I can get the spindle to run and the head to move up and down and y- and y+ but x-and x+ tries to move but seems to struggle.
Could this be that it’s set in a program from previous years.
