Go to your local stationers and buy one of those big fat Eddings or Pentel pens.
Don't leak, don't get knocked over, always handy.

Buy a cheap Aldi vernier, grind the outside leg off and sharpen the moveable jaw and you have *precision* odd leg calipers.
