Could some one shed some light as to which I would need?
The main reason I want one is to tram (I think that the right term?) my machine but I don't really get the difference between the two.

I don't think there IS any difference between the two, it's just different names for the same thing. If you're buying a DTI, I strongly suggest you get an analogue one rather than a digital one as it's far easier to see the hand move. In my opinion, the digital ones are a bit of a gimmick.
Dial gauge , dial test indicator , DTI , or where I work "clock" are all different names for the same thing. Mike
there are however two types, a plunger type e.g.

and a lever type e.g.

Each has pros and cons. Generally I find the lever type more useful [discuss]

Thanks for the replies everyone, I have bought both a plunger type and a finger/lever type - looking forward to measuring my backlash and tram tonight!!.........man......I'm sure I used to be cooler than this! :hysterical:
