Does Z travel make sense as a number?

I have been watching and reading my way through build logs and guides and hadn't come across a discussion concerning the usage of the Z-axis in the way you've laid out above. I guess at that point it's presumed that the thread starter knows their use parameters and is only after mechanical analysis.
