I'm looking to lift / lower a load of about 20 or 30 kg, 2.5 metres in about 15 - 30 seconds... I did think of a 4x4 12v type winch, but also thought there might be an easier / cheaper solution???
Any thoughts from the collective on an elegant and efficient solution?

Lidl are doing some 250kg electric hoists with some form of jib [ not undone that box yet ] for £59.99
Already have one on the big CNC for lifting the vises and 4th axis on, both weight best end of 70 kg each.
hmmm counter balance is an interesting avenue!
It's an application a little bit like a "loft hatch", although it's in an outbuilding... Instead of the "loft hatch" shaped hole in the ceiling, I'm thinking of a millers hatch... not sure if that's the right name but the hatch they use in windmills...

No not on their web site any more, it was on offer last Monday so they just might still have stock, try a phone call.
It's a two pack deal, one box contains the winch, identical to this one.

And a second box with a swivel jib in it. As I say I have not undone that one as I'm building one onto the small TOS lathe for lifting big electric motor rotors into the chuck and to be honest the jig looks a bit flimsy.
I really need about 350 to 400 kg lift so I'm going to build another set of falls into the cable lift which should give me a safe working load of 500kg.

Google brought up some of that info, including an email help address so I've sent the question off to them, I'll ring the local branch in the morning too.

Didn't see that spec but I already have one of the winches and it does a good job.
You really need to run it as a double cable i.e. 250 kg load as in single cable mode it a bit fast.
Don't fancy that jib at 600 kg at 750mm, it's only a bit of poxy tube held together with an exhaust clamp. I value my feet more than that
Counterweights are the standard way of flying theatre scenery, mebbe something adaptable;

one thing to be aware of with counterweights is leaving carrying side unloaded, if its unbraked it will head for the roof carrying anything or anyone attached.
