It has rotational symmetry, so use the revolved profile tool... or whatever they call it these days. You then just draw the cross section, specify the axis and the program creates the solid.
Nice one J! Now ive manage to do that dont suppose you have an idea of how to hollow the middle out do you? say 10mm thick
Attachment 8494
Your 2D profile needs to include the 'hollow' as well, then there is no need to hollow out.. the red area indicates the original profile before revolving to 3D.
See the attached file:

By the way, this is Alibre Design, not solidworks but the principle is the same.
Ah ha nice one robo! unfortunately i still cant draw like that in SW so i have to draw that shape in corel and import it that way lol still getting used to the planes
would it be the shell comand in SW by any chance Clive
Anyone know where to download free models.... for example
extrusion
supported rail
spindle etc etc
You can download them from within Sketchup (there's a very large google repository of all sorts of objects) then export them and import them into your program of choice. However sometimes this is problematic and after messing around with it, I found it easier just to model them from scratch(in AutoCAD in my case).
Assuming you can extrude lines in solidworks? I can send you some files for supported rail and extrusion. What size extrusion?
That would be great! I'm using TBR20 my email is Derek at leisure-systems.co.uk
Why not have a go at lathe spinning?
Is TBR20 the same as SBR20? I'm guessing it is.
expect an email shortly :)
You will get loads of 3D / 2D stuff from:

well guys thanks for the help, i know its not what i initially asked for but i started on something a little more simple... my gantry design. bare in mind ive been using solidworks now for oooooohhhh 3 hrs haha

What a load of shit hahahaha :-p
HAHA cheers shrek! :)
Pretty cool for that amount of time on SW!
Thanks bud, in all fairness the extrusion is a downloaded part. its only the gantry sides ive drawn but learnt that and how to mate (The wife will be happy im not pestering her to mate now :p ) just need to figure it out what it is i want to make haha
Still a good effort, and importing the extrusion is a good leap forward. You will find yourself revising the design over and over again, thats what happens when you do 3D.
Tip: with files like the extrusion, save it in multiple sizes, in its own folder: e.g, Folder: 20x60. Files, 20x60x100, 20x60x150, 20x60x200 etc. It will save you loads of time in the future!
