These lads deal with a lot of Wadkin machines, maybe they can help ?

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
i found the manuals for lots of there machines but not the one am looking at, although the company that service them said they would send me one if i cover the printing and postage. i think i found the manual for the bosh controller but am fairly sure i will have to replace the full gubbins
Am going to have a look at one of these on monday/tuesday, am guessing that it will need a full refit , but if the beds not bent and the rails guides are ok, i will give it a go.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
These old Wadkins change hands on Ebay for around £1000-1500 and if you have the space they are a good buy in my opinion. I have seen some good mach conversions and for bulk processing stuff like guitar bodies and necks they are ideal. I remember seen some high end videos of guitar factories in the US and they were using machines like this for 3d profiling the wood stock.
Getting old parts is going to be hard and expensive. best bet would be new servo motors, budget £3-4000 for a new set of good quailty chinese servo packs.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
Hi,
I am expecting to replace the full gubbins, but have the spindle and other parts serviced. Allthough, if the servoes do work, it will be a bonus. If i have read the spindle paperwork correctly ( fast browse, will read through later ), it will go from 1500 - 20k+, so should be capable of doing some stone, engraving at least, idealy, be able to surface a gravestone and engrave it.
i was sort of hoping to do the full re-fit, for around 3 or 4k at the most. If the servos and drives need replacing, they dont have to be industrial grade as its not going to be the main machine or running more than a few hours a day, ( am building that ), i just thought its a very good large machine base to start with, as long as the rails arnt bent,
I suupose a good question for me to ask advise on is
what would you check if you was going to have a look at a large machine of this type., apart from screws and rails. Am not sure there is power were it is so i might have to take a Jenny down there or rent one, any advice welcome

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
going to have a look at this tomorrow, so

WADKIN ROUTER CNC TWIN HEAD 2 VACUUM PUMPS UX2LC C3 BOSCH CONTROL CC100 MACHINE | eBay
Is it this machine? Looks like it is being stored in an open sided shed. Most meaningfull checks need the machine to be under power. A test for backlash in the screws might be usefull and listen to the spindle for bearing issues.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
yes it its,
am currently trying to see if i can power it when i inspect it, but for the price i might get it for ( pluss delivery costs ), it probably worth it for the frame and rails,

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
That has been on for quite a while now. I had it on my watch list as I thought it looked good value especially as it includes 2x vac pumps. It is certainly worth making an offer IMHO. Good luck. G.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
yes thats what i was thinking, worth a punt at the right offer price, its a bit of a job to service, and costly, but worth a crack at the right price. I just need to check that its not bent to badly, I have wrote off the spindle because i can buy one and a vdf, cheeper than i can service that one. I would be happy if the servos and drives work, meaning i only had to replace the controller.
but will see tomorrow,

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
The machine was allegedly working prior to removal so why would the screws be likely to be bent?. If there is nothing wrong with the controller why change it? I understand that these machines were quite robust and that many are still in use. I recently bought an old SCM 120 on ebay now and it is now working well. The spindle in that machine will be of a far better quality than any replacement would be, and the machine may well have a tool change system. If you buy the machine my advice would be to get it home (workshop?) and see just what you have got. You may well be in for a pleasant suprise-I hope so anyway. Transport is likely to be quite expensive, the SCM cost about 1k to bring from the south coast to Bourne Lincolnshire, But I had quotes up to twice that. Enjoy your day tomorrow-good haggling. G.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
I agree with Geoffrey, its worth spending a little time getting it back up and running as it stands. The controller on this will be quite nice to use and very reliable in comparison to a standard mach3 setup.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
I like to consider worst case scenario first, with when buying used stuff, and work back from there, i got the manual for the controller, managed to track down the manuals for both the spindle and the machine ( not orderd yet, just found ).
Am not sure the controller is capable of what i need, and it seems the only way to communicate with it ( is restricted to max 9600br,

.
scrap dealers not machine dealers, might not of understood how carfull you have to loads these, and i wander why it ended up at there in the first place, instead of being sold in place.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
just got back
its been left outside ( undercover ) for a few months, could not test it powered, rails have some surface rust on, box with electics in looks fine, ITS HUGE, just trying to price up delivery before i consider an offer
-
Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
i offered to buy it last week, but they couldn't be bothered to deliver it.
-
Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
delivery is quite expensive, did you go have a look at it ?
-
Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
no, after i had a run around from the person who answered the phone i thought better of it.
-
Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
we had a bit of a wait around today as well, will see how we go tomorrow,

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
Yes, scrap dealers selling, but that does not mean the machine is scrap. There could be many reasons for it being in a scrap yard. Often if a landlord or liquidator needs to clear a unit quickly it is the easiest way to sell. It would be quite difficult to lift that machine by the ballscrews, so I doubt if the are damaged!!! As i said before it cost about 1K to transport my SCM (£800+vat) using a lorry with hiab to enable both loading and unloading as we had no access to a forklift capable of handling 5 tonnes. Don,t worry about a bit of surface rust on the rails - just take a look at KingCreakies machine refurb - he ended up with "rusty rails looking like new. Be brave, try an offer of 1K and see how it goes!!! G.

Chances are the Motor drives use -/+ 10v analog signals rather than step and direction signals in which case you may just get away with changing out the controller for one that can output analog signals. Like the CSMIO-IP-A.
Also you'll need shed load of inputs to keep most of it's functions so be aware that what ever you Control it with will need to provide plenty of Inputs.!!. . . Standard parallel port won't be much use here. . .Lol

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
Cheers, i was thinking the same, its a shame they did not store it inside, and i will have to strip down all the electric to make sure they are dry prior to powering it, everything apart from the drivers and controllers ( spindle, motors, barings, hydro connections and cnccontroller ), has been exposed to the elements for at least a few months.
a upgrade of main parts is looking like 5-6k, and maybe 5 days.
So will decide in morning, its still worth it for the right price
so, will see what deal there is to be done tomorrow afternoon

No maybe to it there will be more than any 5 days to compleltely retrofit, test and setup this thing and if you have no experience then maybe 5 weeks. . .Lol

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
Hi jazz, am picking one of the cards you suggested on the other thread for the machine am building, if i get this machine tomorrow, i will spend some time photographing everything and start asking for advise before i start anything.

true, i ment 5 days for swapping over the parts and testing the electrics, testing and setup is another story.
Its a weigh up at the mo over time costs in salvaging/servicing parts, over replacing/fitting them,

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
well, i put a very good offer in and it was not acsepted, with them being scrap dealers not machine resellers, they have not realised it should have been kept inside, shame really, but the rails and baering and ballnuts have rusted, i would have took a risk with the electronics, but when absolutly everything needs replacing, its not worth it.
If anyone else was considering this, you need to go look before you put in an offer because it does not look the same as it does in the photos,

What about this one?
Wadkin UXFC CNC Router Touch Screen Ex University | eBay
Its way over priced but looks in good condition, Might be worth £3000? They have had it up for a while might be looking to get rid.
There have been some really nice Wadkin and SCM routers like this come up over the last 6 months, some had already been converted to new electronics like the one listed above. So I wouldn't get to hung up on this one.

Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
thanks, allready on it, am going to have a look at 2 tomorrow as well, i will post up the pictures i took yesterday when i get back later,
-
Re: wadkin ux2lc/c3 with bosh cc100 controller
Take a look at the servos and drives and see if they are original or replaced along with the new controller. New drives should be easier to source and replace if you have any problems.
